What does an artist do when they can't find a product that they want?
They make it.
Being sensitive or allergic to so many perfumes and strong smells presented an ongoing problem for me when I was searching for the perfect scent... I was unable to find a body spray that was a good fit for me (and one that didn't cause sneezing fits) so I decided to start making my own...and as with anything creative an artist gets hold of...I made it an obsessive mission instead of just a weekend project!
Knowing exactly what was going into the recipe was very important to me...as was finding locally sourced ingredients or growing my own whenever possible.
after much mixing and testing several recipes, each scent now has 3 notes with a recognizable settling note...and not one of them makes me sneeze or break-out after application! hooray! Success!
Now i'm hustling some larger batches so I can share the joy with you :)

A digital image often starts in the same place any art begins...in the artists sketchbook
A small sketch can turn bigger than life and change and reform through different media...
the above sketch was turned into ink with brush strokes on illustration paper.
The ink drawing was then scanned and turned into a vector file with adobe illustrator
Adobe Illustrator CS6 then allows me to block in colors using a reduction technique that will retain my natural hand, then I finish the details using the drawing tool
The reason I love working in a vector format is because the final result can be printed larger than life if desired, and the edges and colors retain their integrity...there is no pixelation during size changes, and small details and shapes are easily changed.
The final result is an image that prints beautifully.

For as long as I can remember I've had an allergy to shellfish ...but since vector lobsters suit me much better than the real thing, when a client asked me for a simple lobster silhouette I happily set out to go above and beyond to explore the possibilities within the shape.
Even with the endless fear of being taken down by one of these live little buggers,
I still rather love them as a standard icon of the State of Maine.
The final vector file was delivered to the client and this similar version of the Lobster Sun Set design was uploaded to my printing partners at Fine Art American and is now available as prints and merchandise through my website erinthomas.art
Working the image in a flexible vector format allowed me to pattern and manipulate the image for several other printing applications like t shirts or surface design.
